Freda Kelly worked for Brian Epstein’s NEMS Enterprises as wages clerk and became the Beatles fan club organizer from it’s start in 1963 to it’s close in 1972, when she retired from the organization. She was along for the ride. In the case of Magical Mystery Tour she was literally along for the ride, a passenger on the film’s bus tour.

Most of the documentary focuses on the years 1962 and 1963 when team behind the scenes was still a close-knit family, all experiencing the thrill of becoming a major sensation. Manager Brian Epstein was the vision behind the business side, and he “was the boss.” When he died in 1967, the business structure seems to have fallen into chaos, and yet almost nothing of substance is said about those last years before the fan club was closed in 1972. The story is told (again and again) that Freda managed the fan club and it’s mail. Without much else to build on, the story gets by on nostalgia, and often feels a little superficial. At several points in the story, they seem to struggle to fill the 90 min.

It could have easily been an hour. Even when the film cues us to 1965 they’re still talking about Ringo joining the band, which happened two and a half years earlier. Knowing a little but about the cost of master recording & publishing costs, I was happily surprised to hear a couple of Beatles recordings used for the film. The other music used is a combination of nicely chosen early-60s tracks that inspired the Beatles, and less interesting original music which seemed like it was designed to sound like something between “Yesterday” and “Blackbird”.
